Impractical Design – CAD

This fun mini project is where you take an everyday product, analyse what makes the product work/practical, redesign that product so that is dysfunctional or impractical.

4 important activities are in this unit.

  • Critical thinking – analysing a product.
  • Creative thinking – generating ideas.
  • Generation of ideas.
  • CAD – becoming a expert – Sensei of ‘Fusion’!
  • Modelling techniques – CAD and 3D printing.

Study the products below – Why wouldn’t that work? What is the true function of the product?

Have a browse through the below websites to get an idea of what you will do.

The Task
  • Find a common everyday product.
    • Take a photo (later you will make a poster with it).
  • Deconstruct the product and work out what the practical  functions are.
    • Make a list of the practical functions on the Padlet as well in a document (later you will make a poster with it).
    • Make a list of how you will design impracticality on the same Padlet (later you will make a poster with it).
  • Sketch 10 to 12 napkin sketches.
  • In a CAD program (we use Fusion) develop your prototype.
    • Including, rendering and lighting (Photorealistic image).
  • 3D print a model.
  • Make you poster.
  • Get ready for a presentation.
